The Gies Campus of Chicago Jesuit Academy
In October 2015, Chicago Jesuit Academy’s campus at 5058 West Jackson Boulevard was officially renamed The Gies Campus of Chicago Jesuit Academy. By renaming the campus, the Board of Directors of CJA sought to recognize the instrumental role that Larry and Beth Gies and The Gies Foundation have played in the founding and growth of Chicago Jesuit Academy.
Thanks to an introduction to the concept of Chicago Jesuit Academy in 2005 from a mutual friend who knew of Larry’s past work with and deep interest in the future of children on Chicago’s West Side, Larry was eager to learn more. He called Catherine Cassidy – CJA’s founding Vice President of Operations & Development – to set up a face-to-face meeting while driving on I-57 to teach a business course at the University of Illinois.
Matthew Lynch joined Larry and Catherine at that first meeting. Matthew and Catherine asked The Gies Foundation to sponsor scholarships for six students in each of CJA’s grade levels. Four days later, The Gies Foundation promised to do precisely that. In the years that followed, The Gies Foundation increased their investment in CJA from 6, to 12, to 18, to 24, to 36 comprehensive scholarships for our students. By the 2019-2020 school year, The Gies Foundation’s support will grow to support 52 students at CJA.
Larry and Beth’s support for CJA spans well beyond scholarships for our young men. Beth – a former teacher – regularly tutors our students. Larry provides critical strategic guidance as CJA’s enrollment continues to grow and our College-Persistence Office expands to help more children find their path to and through college prep high schools, colleges and universities.
Most importantly, CJA has always been able to count on The Gies Foundation during times of crisis. When escalating gun violence threatened our students’ safety, Larry quickly agreed to fund daily patrols by a Cook County Sheriff’s Police Officer at CJA and the blocks around our campus. Larry, Beth and The Gies Foundation are deeply committed to creating opportunities for young men who are growing up on Chicago’s West Side.
