The Province Scholars Program
During the summer of 2019, Chicago Jesuit Academy (CJA) will be offering a highly selective program to students from Jesuit high schools in Chicago. CJA offers young men with educational and economic needs access to a Catholic, college preparatory middle and elementary school education in the Jesuit tradition. Through this opportunity, Province Scholars will receive hands-on training, contemplate possible careers in education and gain first-hand experience serving middle school students in need of additional academic support.
After participating in a weeklong training session, Province Scholars will work one-on-one and in small groups with 6th-8th grade students at Chicago Jesuit Academy during their summer quarter, assisting with literacy and mathematics instruction during the program and meeting with CJA staff in the afternoons to debrief and improve practice. Province Scholars will also participate in weekly seminar discussions and have access to a series of influential educational speakers, familiarizing them with various career paths available to highly ambitious, dedicated students.
Students at Jesuit high schools who are juniors or seniors in the 2018-19 academic year are eligible for the program. Candidates should have an interest in education and social justice and should be committed to the idea that all students have a right to a quality education. Candidates should demonstrate leadership at their current school and should be in good academic standing, with a GPA of at least 3.0.
Scholars will work at CJA Monday-Friday, 7:30-2:30 PM. Scholars begin work on Wednesday, June 19 and conclude on Thursday, July 25. All scholars will receive a $1,500 stipend as compensation for the summer. If an interested candidate has concerns about the GPA requirement, dates of the program or compensation, please contact program directors Tom Van Grinsven and Sonia Odom at firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com.
The application includes a personal statement and two letters of recommendation. Recommendations may come from school or work experience and may be sent via email to the program directors. The application for the 2019 program is now closed.
Please contact the program directors with additional questions.
