How is middle school different from lower school?
Teachers expect a lot because high school is looking at your grades. If your i-Ready score is low, they’re gonna push you.
Is high school something that you’re thinking about?
Yeah. I feel like I’m ready for it. I know I still got to work on some stuff but, like, I feel like I’m ready.
Social workers push into every grade. What is one thing that you learned from a social worker this year?
Can I say something from past years? Some social workers taught us to try to control your emotions. You can’t take it out on people because you don’t know what’s going on with them.
How is it that you work through your emotions?
If I’m not in school, I listen to music and just forget about everything else. If I’m at school, I take a break in the back of the class.
Why do you think it’s important we started to enroll girls at CJA?
I feel like CJA has been an all-boys school since I don’t know when, but it’s been an all-boys school since I’ve been here. I feel like this, I think it’s time for a change because we get a new building, and I feel like it’s good to have third- and fourth-grade girls.
What’s your favorite part of school?
My favorite part is going to PE or Music. Music because Mr. Carroll pushes us because he thinks we could do better.
You play the trombone. How is it you know exactly where to stop to get the note?
It’s hard. Sometimes I get the notes wrong. You got to be awake. You got to be moving to get to the position. When you play it two times a week, like I do, and on the weekend you start to understand it.
What are you thankful for?
I’m thankful for my mom and CJA. My mom because she helps me do right, and CJA because they check in and make sure everything’s okay, and they always want to make sure we have everything.
What’s your favorite grad-at-grad value?
My favorite grad-at-grad is open to growth because every Friday before chapel, I go downstairs and help the fourth and fifth graders out. I want to just hang out during that time, but I know I set a good example by going down there with them. Every time they’re having a hard time, I make sure they do the right thing. I want to make sure that I don’t have a bad attitude because they can feed off of that. I try to be a good example when we walk to chapel.
Also, sometimes on Fridays, we have a dance off — especially in Ms. Hagerty’s class.
As a seventh grader, do you get to participate in the dance off?
I get to participate, but I choose not to. I do not like dancing.
Ha! Ok. Who is the best dancer?
Kirkpatrick. He brings moves out of nowhere.
What’s the grad-at-grad value that you find most challenging?
I would say loving even though loving is like, easy, sometimes it’s not easy to spread love.
What does it mean to be part of the CJA community?
Mr. Schaeur and Mr. Mason always say CJA will always follow you wherever you go, and you can come back if you need something.
