Construction
Rakeem is a Laborer at A-One Construction. He has been able to advance in his career by connecting with people in construction, going to different community events, and networking with the Laborer’s Union. His goal of having his own business is very important to him, as is advancing African Americans in all categories: financially, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
He likes construction because every day for Rakeem is a challenge and is something new. He is most proud of being in the union, working towards his goals and setting new ones. His favorite CJA memory was when CJA and five other schools got to play at Andy’s Jazz Club. He feels it was an incredible experience to be able to perform at a place like Andy’s and feel good about his first freestyle stage performance. He recently went back to Andy’s to enjoy the music , watch Mr. Carroll play, and reminisce. His advice is to never give up. “Life is like a heart-monitor. We have our ups and downs. We might want things to be easy but experiencing the highs will get us through when the times are low.”
