At CJA all students enjoy fun and content-rich classes in both music and Physical Education (PE). In a typical week, students have music two days alternating with PE two days. Curriculum varies by grade level and grows in expectations and content as students progress.
During 3rd and 4th grade, students learn how to sing in tune, understand verses and choruses and prepare for rehearsal and concerts.
All Students have Physical Education (PE) twice a week and participate in a variety of activities including endurance training, recreation games, soccer, basketball and football. Students learn the fundamentals of these activities but instruction also includes discussions about sportsmanship, teamwork, social skills and nutrition.
During 3rd & 4th grade, students learn about identifying characteristics of health-related and skill-related fitness as it is a major component of physical activity. Students are introduced to components of fitness such as flexibility, muscular strength, endurance and balance. Teachers also reinforce the importance of following instructions and being positive and respectful to both peers and teachers.
During 5th and 6th Grade, students learn how to display sportsmanship and the importance of respecting themselves and their classmates. Students also learn how to translate the skills they work on during gameplay scenarios. This includes both practice and gameplay activities.
Students practice the skill of the day with a partner before performing it during gameplay.
During 7th and 8th grade, students participate in a variety of skill-specific exercises. Students are assigned to a team for tournament play, and at the end of class, students gather with their groups and give peer assessment feedback. Students are encouraged to demonstrate actions that represent the graduate-at-graduation principles during gameplay and peer assessments.
