What’s it like being a fourth grader?

I like being in fourth grade. I want to make sure I’m doing things the right way. I try to give everyone a little bit more grace when we aren’t doing what we need to do, and I know I need to be a supportive scholar to my friends and classmates. When my classmates and I make mistakes, we’re able to fix them.

How has your year been?

My year has been wonderful. When I moved to this school, I didn’t know anything really about it, but over time, I really started to like it. When I started, I thought the boys and girls would be together in class. It took me a while to get used to it, but I think it’s good because we don’t distract each other.

I hear that you’re a great artist. Is that something you like to do?

I like to draw, and I like Art Class. Right now, we’re painting masks!

What’s your favorite subject?

My favorite subject is Math. I love Math. I like adding and subtracting fractions. The thing that I like about them is when we have to convert them into different fractions. It’s basically multiplication. I started fifth-grade Math this year. When I started, we were working with cubes on volume, and I didn’t get it at first. But now, I understand it and really like the new curriculum.

What’s your favorite thing about CJA?

My favorite thing is all the fun activities that we get to do, like the field trips. We get to go on a lot of field trips in fourth grade! I like going on field trips because I’m adventurous. My favorite field trip I’ve been on is when we went to the Museum of Science and Industry; they have a place where you can watch lightning! I love Science and outer space. I want to be an astronaut and work at NASA or be an artist.

You work with a volunteer. What is that like?

I read with Mr. Hartney. We’re reading Call of the Wild which is about a dog and what his life is like. I really like working with him.

What’s your favorite Grad-at-Grad value and why?

I like each of them, but my favorite Grad-at-Grad value is Seeking Intellectual Excellence. It means focusing on your learning and trying your best. I also like Committed to Doing Justice, because doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, just feels good.

What are you thankful for?

I’m thankful for having a roof over my head, and I’m thankful for my community and my school.
